When a senior engineer in LATAM stays with a team for years, it’s rarely just about the stack.
That’s the part of my work I care about most: not just connecting talent with opportunities, but building the exact conditions that make great people want to stay, grow, and genuinely commit.
After years of leading people strategy in distributed tech environments, I’ve learned that long-term retention isn't built on luck. It’s built on intentional choices.
What actually builds retention
Treating global talent as core team members
High-performing distributed teams share something simple: equal trust and backing. Clear room to grow, autonomy, and genuine integration into the daily decisions. Not as a nice add-on, but as the core operating model.
Community is a business decision
We see this every day through initiatives like Thaloz House, our physical space in Uruguay where engineers connect and collaborate in person.

Yet community goes far beyond a location. It lives in our monthly 1-on-1s, in keeping our doors open to former team members who still want to stay close, and in how we acknowledge each other. Peer-to-peer recognition is a core part of our culture, allowing team members to highlight great work directly.
At the same time, through our Thaloz Rewards Program, engineers earn Drakmas (our coin) that can be redeemed for experiences they actually care about, including trips.
None of this is just for morale. When people feel seen, supported, and valued by both their leaders and their peers, clients feel that difference directly in quality, ownership, and responsiveness.
Fit matters more than geography
LATAM’s strength isn’t just location or time-zone overlap. It’s the ability to collaborate in real time, joining daily standups as true peers. That proximity builds a level of alignment that directly shapes team stability.
When we invest in people, retention stops being a challenge and starts being the natural outcome.
Building distributed tech teams that last takes genuine care, consistency, and strategy. That’s the work we do at Thaloz every day, and it’s what makes the difference over time.
Final thoughts
Building a distributed engineering team that lasts takes real investment in people, not just placement. That's the work we do at Thaloz every day, and it's also the part we're proudest to show.
If you want to talk through what that looks like for your team, I'd genuinely love to hear where you're starting from.
